Bombardier Aerospace recently celebrated the 15th anniversary of the first delivery of a CRJ Series regional jet. The first CRJ100 regional jet was delivered to Lufthansa CityLine on October 19, 1992.
The anniversary was celebrated at a dinner in Cologne, Germany attended by executives from Bombardier Aerospace, General Electric Aircraft Engines and Lufthansa CityLine.
Lufthansa CityLine put its first CRJ aircraft into revenue service on November 1, 1992, flying between Cologne, Germany and Barcelona, Spain. That flight, and the instant reliability of this new type of airline transportation, began the regional jet revolution that positioned the CRJ Series as the most successful regional aircraft program in history. Bombardier Regional Aircraft has booked firm orders for 1,594 CRJ Series jets, with 1,435 delivered as of July 31, 2007.
"Fifteen years ago, Lufthansa CityLine fleet chief Capt. Werner Laatz said the CRJ aircraft would be very popular with passengers and crew alike," said Steven Ridolfi, President, Bombardier Regional Aircraft. "Capt. Laatz also predicted that the CRJ jetliner would have a long and successful affiliation with Lufthansa CityLinehe was right on both counts!"
To date, Lufthansa City Line has ordered 92 CRJ aircraft - 35 CRJ100, 10 CRJ200, 20 CRJ700 and 27 CRJ900 regional jets.
"From the first CRJ aircraft revenue flight in November of 1992, we have benefited from Lufthansa's experience and advice while developing the CRJ product line," said Mr. Ridolfi. "The CRJ aircraft has been continually improved to rise above the competition and meet the demands of an ever-changing market."
"We appreciate the good and successful co-operation over the past years," said Klaus Froese, Managing Director, Lufthansa CityLine. "This co-operation has led to the implementation of many improvements and new developments which, up to now, established standards in flight operations to guarantee a secure, punctual and comfortable means of transportation for our passengers.
"We are very proud of the track record of the CRJ from the beginning," said Mr. Froese.
Bombardier's CRJ NextGen (next generation) aircraft are the most recent step in the evolution of the CRJ Series. In February 2007, Bombardier launched the 100-seat CRJ1000 regional jet, and a few months later, in May, announced that the interiors and windows for this aircraft would also be available in CRJ700 NextGen and CRJ900 NextGen regional jets. In addition, compared to the classic CRJ700 and CRJ900 aircraft, the CRJ700 NextGen and CRJ900 NextGen regional jets offer reduced fuel consumption, lower trip operating costs and lower airframe direct maintenance costs. The CRJ1000 NextGen jet is currently in development and scheduled for certification and initial deliveries late in 2009.
As of September, 2007 the CRJ Series worldwide fleet had completed more than 19,700,000 flight hours and 16,500,000 cycles, and had carried approximately 593,000,000 passengers. CRJ Series aircraft are in service with more than 60 airlines and other operators.
