The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has awarded BAE Systems a £17
million ($33 million) contract for the supply of 105mm improved ammunition
intended for British artillery regiments equipped with L118 105mm Light Guns.
British Army and Royal Marines artillery regiments are equipped with this gun.
After the new 105mm shell has been qualified, MoD will proceed to give green
light to a procurement order for 50,000 high explosive shells valued at £17 million. This is an
initial buy which means new orders for additional shells might follow in the
near future. BAE Systems' Land Systems proposal was selected by its proven
technology and better value for money.
Land Systems will manufacture the contracted items at a new manufacturing
facility at Glascoed in South Wales, UK. This new facility was built with scope
to execute new British ammunition programs and to proceed with international
export orders for such items. Deliveries are expected to begin late in 2006 and
will be spread over three years, with possible additional buys until 2017.
The new ammunition being ordered by MoD will respond to the lessons learned by
British forces during the recent conflicts in Iraq and in Afghanistan. It will
be more effective against a range of targets and even safer to store, transport
