The French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA) has awarded GIAT Industries a €300 million ($380 million) procurement contract for 72 Caesar truck-mounted 155mm 52-caliber howitzers. These howitzers will be used to equip eight artillery batteries of the French Army by 2011.

The contract signed between DGA and GIAT also provides maintenance and logistics support services that will enable French artillery regiments operating Caesar to yield 80% availability at any time over a five years period. This contract was already anticipated in early 2004 but it has been at the end of the year when it has turned into firm order.

Caesar is a brand-new concept in artillery. Installed on a 6x6 all-terrain armored truck the resulting howitzer features superior mobility as well as impressive overall performance being capable of delivering six 155mm rounds in less than two minutes at ranges of up to 40 kilometers. It can fire a wide range of 155mm munitions including NATO standardized ammunition. In addition, Caesar is lightweight enough to be airlifted inside a C130-sized aircraft or the new A400M tactical transport aircraft under development for several European armed forces.
