The Australian Ministry for Defense has chosen Eurocopter's NH90 tactical
transport helicopter to meet the requirements expressed under Air 9000 program.
The NH90 version which will be provided to the Australian Army is called the
12 MRH90 helicopter will be supplied in a configuration suited to the needs of
the Australian Army. These helicopters will be employed to airlift Australian
troops to the battlefield. The Australian decision follows the Sultanate of Oman
selection of 20 NH90 helicopters.
By selecting the NH90 helicopter, the Australian government renews its intention
of establishing a self-contained and permanent industrial pole of excellence
dedicated to manufacturing helicopters. This aim was first unveiled with the
selection of Eurocopter's Tiger ARH attack helicopter. Both helicopters will be
manufactured and assembled locally in Australia by Australian Aerospace at its
Brisbane Airport facilities.
Australia becomes the eleventh country to have chosen the NH90 helicopter, which
until now has booked 357 firm orders NH90s and 86 options. The MRH90 is a
multirole helicopter capable of carrying more troops and cargo, faster and
further than helicopters of the same weight. The helicopter offers much lower
operating and maintenance costs than other medium-size, twin-engine helicopters.
The MRH90 will be fully interoperable with NATO forces and might be configured
in more ways than current helicopters. Composite airframe and fly-by-wire
controls are standard features of the NH90 family of helicopters and will be
provided to the MRH90 as well.
