The French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA) awarded MBDA a development and
procurement contract for the Exocet MM40 Block 3 anti-ship/attack missile.
This contract also provides funding for integration of the air-launcher AM39
anti-ship missile onto Rafale M multi-role fighter. There is option to upgrade
extensive MM 40 Block 2 missiles deployed by the French Navy to the Block 3
standard.
The MM40 Exocet Block 3 will offers extended range (up to 180 km / +96 nm),
vertical launch compatibility, operation in littoral environment, coastal
targets attack capability and other enhancements over previous Exocet models. A
new turbojet propulsion system will provide the extended range required by the
newest Exocet variant.
The new missile will be installed on surface combatants and would be fully
compatible with new generation vessels such as Horizon class destroyers and
FREMM class frigates.
The initial operational capability of Exocet Block 3 missile within the French
Navy is planned for 2006. Export customers would also take benefit from Exocet
Block 3 upgrade.
