Germany Orders MUNGO Light Armored Vehicles

Released on Friday, December 12, 2003
The German Federal Ministry of Defense has awarded Krauss-Maffei Wegmann a contract for delivery of 388 MUNGO air-transportable light armored vehicles to support special operations missions.

The German Army will receive 388 MUNGO personnel and cargo transport variant vehicles that will be deployed by CH53 helicopters everywhere. Each MUNGO can accommodate up to 10 fully equipped troops and a payload of 2 tons, it has been suggested by Krauss-Maffei that this figure could be increased in the future to 3.5 tons.

MUNGO lightweight armor provides protection against land mines, 7.62mm NATO standard ammunition and even 7.62mm armor-piercing ammunition through add-on armor.

First MUNGO will be commissioned with the German Special Operations Division in 2004. The total procurement for MUNGO by the German Army is more than 900 vehicles. About 40% of MUNGOs will be delivered in the multi-purpose vehicle variant.
