Released on Thursday, March 20, 2003

The Hellenic Ministry of Defense and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann have signed a contract for the procurement of 170 new Leopard 2 HEL main battle tanks for the Hellenic Army.

This contract also includes options for the supply of further heavy-weight vehicles from the Leopard 2-family like recovery vehicles and assault/bridge layer vehicles, logistics support, simulation and training.

The Leopard 2 HEL battle tanks and additional vehicles and equipment will be supplied between 2006 and 2009.

Greece will become the 11th European country fielding the Leopard 2 main battle tank, also called EuroLeopard.

Leopard 2 HEL, most likely evolved from Leopard 2 A6, is envisaged as the most advanced version of the Leopard 2 family to date.

Greece's decision has been strongly supported on the excellent experience of Hellenic Armed Forces with Leopard 1 and industrial offsets. Krauss-Maffei Wegmann has also signed contracts with Greece in the fields of artillery and air defense systems.
