Brazil-based Embraer company has released that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed with the Indian Defense, Research and Development Organization (DRDO) to support the Indian Air Force new Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system development.

The new AEW&C system will be based on the successful ERJ 145 commercial jet and its EMB 145 intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) platform application. Recently, the ERJ 145 jet was selected for the US Army Aerial Common Sensor (ACS) program. Overall, Embraer expertise in similar developments and the trustworthiness of the ERJ 145 airframe are key factors for Indian DRDO selection.

Now Embraer engineers and Indian government analysts are due to collect necessary technical data on the aircraft for the study which will lead to a final decision on the new AEW&C system. A first contract for three EMB 145 AEW&C platforms and technical support is expected for the development phase. An order for additional aircraft could materialize after the successfully development phase completion, according to Embraer sources.
