Indian Navy to Build Six Scorpene Submarines

The Prime Minister of India, M. Manoham Singh, announced that the Indian Navy has selected the Scorpene submarine bid being offered by DCN and Avantia shipyards. Six submarines of this class are expected to be built in Bombay by Indian state owned Mazagon Dock Limited shipyards.

France's DCN will be the lead contractor along with Spain's Avantia will proceed with technology transfer to India in order to execute successfully the Scorpene submarines construction. The combat system will be provided by Armaris a joint company between Thales France and DCN International. The whole project is expected to last 15 years.

The six conventionally-powered Scorpene submarines will be added to the remarkable submarine fleet already owned by the Indian Navy. By the way, DCN converts its Scorpene submarine into benchmark for 21st century underwater weapon systems having received export orders from Chile (2), Malaysia (2) and now India (6) totaling 10 boats.
