The Japan Defense Agency (JDA) selected AgustaWestland's EH101 helicopter over Sikorsky's S-92 contender to replace current fleet of MH-53E and S-61 helicopters.

AgustaWestland and Kawasaki Heavy Industries have signed the license and purchase agreement to produce and support the EH101 helicopters ordered by the JDA.

The fourteen EH101s ordered for Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) will be employed to perform Mine Countermeasures (MCM) and Antarctic Survey transport missions.

These helicopters will be powered by RTM322 engines and provided with a rear-ramp to facilitate load/unload operations for troops and cargo.

To date, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police was the sole EH101 helicopter operator in Japan, 5 helicopters purchased in mid 1990s.

In addition to Japan, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada, Portugal and Denmark have ordered the EH101 helicopter. The total number of EH101s ordered to date amounts to 146, with over 90 of them delivered.
