The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) has awarded Lockheed-Martin a $768 million contract for next generation kill vehicle for missile defense, designated Miniature Kill Vehicle (MKV), development and demonstration.

This contract will fund MKV development and demonstration activities over an 8 year period.

The MKV will deploy multiple small kill vehicles designed to destroy ballistic missile payloads comprising both warheads and decoys.

The MKV is being designed to fit into existing and planned interceptor boosters. It will be capable of engaging multiple midcourse targets from a single launcher.

The MKV is intended for primary deployment within Ground-based Midcourse Defense Segment (GMDS) beginning in 2012. The MKV will use collision in space to destroy ballistic missile payloads such as warheads and decoys.

Potentially, the MKV could be employed to defend the United States against MIRVed (multiple nukes) ballistic missiles owned by countries such as Russia and China. Such a fact should put further strain on international ties if MKV finally fielded.

However, the MKV seems to be designed to counter future decoys that will be hard to differentiate from real threats.
