Rolls-Royce, the world-leading provider of power systems and services, has joined forces with CALSTAR to offer Eurocopter BO105LS A3 helicopter upgrades through a new Supplemental Type Certificate program.
CALSTAR, a regional, non-profit, public-benefit helicopter ambulance organization in California, US, operates a number of BO105LS A3, light twin-engine helicopters, powered by Rolls-Royce Model 250 engines.
Under the agreement with Rolls-Royce, CALSTAR will upgrade its fleet of air ambulances to Model 250-C30P engines. The new powerplants will enhance "hot and high" performance, reduce direct operating costs and improve availability. The engines also offer longer time between overhauls (TBO).
The Model 250-C30P offers up to 30 percent improvement in shaft horsepower, which is rated at 650 shp for takeoff.
In addition to upgrading its own fleet, CALSTAR will offer upgrades to other BO105LS A3 owners and operators, enabling them to benefit from similar enhancements. More than 50 BO105LS A3 aircraft were produced, with much of the fleet remaining in service worldwide.
Scott Crislip, President Helicopters & Small Gas Turbine Engines for Rolls-Royce, said, "The Rolls-Royce and CALSTAR team will enable BO105 operators and owners to reduce their costs and increase their power through this upgrade. It's an important step forward for a venerable aircraft with a history of success."
Joe Cook, President of CALSTAR, said, "This improvement will provide our crews with an extra safety and performance margin when responding to medical emergencies in the Sierra mountains. The BO105LS is a real workhorse for us. We expect the C30 engines to lower operating costs, improve performance and provide CALSTAR with a solid, dependable, high-altitude light twin, well into the next decade."
In total, nearly 30,000 Model 250 engines have been produced, with approximately 16,000 remaining in service. It remains one of the highest-selling engines made by Rolls-Royce.
