Marconi Systems (AMS), an equally shared company between Italy's Finmeccanica
and UK's BAE Systems, has announced that the Sampson multi-functional radar
system being developed for UK Type 45 destroyers achieved a major milestone with
the installation on a Type 45 representative foremast at AMS' Cowes site, United
This event follows the completion of Sampson radar antenna extensive tests
program performed at AMS' facilities. Now the mast-mounted Sampson radar system
will begin testing on the tower prior to start the PAAMS integration program
next year. PAAMS, highlighting Sampson and the ASTER missile family, is the Type
45 destroyers anti-air warfare (AAW) weapon systems and the cornerstone of the
entire Type 45 program.
Alenia Marconi Systems also released that the second Sampson multi-functional
radar system has been assembled successfully and is undergoing tests in the
antenna test facility. These measures and tests programs are a significant risk
reduction effort for the Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer program that will lead to
commissioning the first fully operational destroyer by 2010.
