Trafalgar

Description: The Trafalgar-class submarines have been designed to perform anti-ship, anti-submarine, surveillance, reconnaissance and land attack warfare missions. They are powered by a single RR1 pressurized water reactor providing 15,000 shaft horse power. In 2000 the RR1 nuclear reactor demonstrated to have some design deficiencies and the Trafalgar and Swiftsure class submarines were retained at homeport for ship repair.

Each Trafalgar-class submarine features 5 533mm torpedo tubes. The Tigerfish and Spearfish torpedoes and SubHarpoon missiles are employed in engagements against ships and submarines. The Tomahawk missiles provide land attack capability. The Land Attack capability was demonstrated for the first time by Royal Navy's submarines during the former Yugoslavia conflict. Since then, the Tomahawk missiles have been employed by British submarines in 2001 Afghanistan and 2003 Iraq campaigns.

The Royal Navy ordered 7 Trafalgar-class submarines with commissioning starting in 1983 through 1991. These submarines will remain in service with the Royal Navy based at Devonport until their replacement is available by 2020. In March 2006 the Royal Navy released that Trafalgar-class boats out of service date was as follows: HMS Trafalgar (2008), HMS Turbulent (2011), HMS Tireless (2013), HMS Torbay (2015), HMS Trenchant (2017), HMS Talent (2019), and HMS Triumph (2022).
