I'd like just to have your point of view about the actual air force top ten in the world. For me is the following:

1 USA

2 Russia

3 China

4 France

5 UK

6 India

7 Israel

8 Germany

9 Italy

10 Saudi Arabia

It depends on what you judge it. I would judge it on the quantity/quality ratio of the current fleets and their abilities(guided bombs, cruise missles, SEAD, AEW, Recon. and of course Air to Air combat). Following this, I would have this order:

1. USA

2. Russia

3. China

4. France

5. Japan

6. Saudi Arabia

7. Israel

8. India

9. UK

10. Germany

I would agree with that. But is China that good? I thought they still had alot of mig21s in use?

And didnt Russia lose alot if its advanced fighters to the Ukraine? Mig 29s and such?

Its amazing to thing that the U.S. airforce could probaly take on the other 9 countries on that list and win.

I must sound like a U.S. loving person but I'm from Australia. But anyone with any interest in the Military can see that the Yanks are just so far out in front its not funny.

China has about 2000 fighters, only 250 are advanced figthers, all variations of the SU-27, a new modern fighter is entering service (J-10). The other 1750 fighters are really crap, but still a lot of fighters.

Russia has still 2600 fighters left from the 6700 figther fleet in 1988. They have a lot of SU-27 and Mig 29 in service.

In the near future, UK and Germany will jump up in this ranking because auf the Eurofighter Typhoon, Germany will get 180 and the UK 232, about two dozens are already in both contries in service. This will beat every SU-27 and Mig 29 as well as the F-15s.

Saudi-Arabia announced the purchase of 72 Typhoons as well, delivieries will start in 2007/2008.

Japan didn't make a choice of replacing the F-15 yet, but there were rumors that Japan will be interested in the F-22. But I don't know.

Indias LCA and MCA will also enter service in the near future, but non of these seems to be as advanced as Typhoon, Rafale, SU-30 or F-22

Israel seems not to replace its F-15 and F-16 figthers in the near future.

In my ranking I've considered air to air combat slightly more important than ground attack.

As I see we agree at least on the first 4. Can you explain me why you consider Saudi Arabia before Israel, being Israel the first operator of F16 after USA and having its own tecnology for its air forces?

Second I don't have the same infos about Japan. For what I see it doesn't deserve to be a top 10, can you update me about its strenght?

I suppose you put Italy as 11th, or worst? I agree that now in Air to Air they are partcularly weak, but they have been the first operator of the Typhoon in the world, with already some scramble during recent olimpic games in Turin. Did you consider that they are going to construct 121 Eurofighter?

I think it is more like this and it will be like this well into the next decade.

1. USA, because ... well I don't think I should explain why because it is obvious.

2. China, because they have the numbers and if I remember well they have the most advanced versions of the Su-27 (Su-30MKK)in service worldwide and in great numbers, I believe some 300 or so and are still building the J-11 the home made version of thies fighter, and have plans for the J-XX which they claim to be an equal to the F-22(a thing that I do not particulary believe)

3. Russia, because they have the technology and knowledge to build advanced fighters.

4. France, because they have more fighters than either the UK or Germany

5. UK because of their Typhoons, and doctrine

6. Israel, because of theiradvanced avionics on US built fighters

7. India, because of the mix of their fighter force (although this may poase serious logistic problems)

8. Japan, because of the fighters they build now (F-2, and maybe they will buy the F-22)

9. Germany, manly because of their Typhoons

10. Italy, also manly because of their Typhoons

My assessment is based on what the air forces habe already in service

Japan: Has 223 F15J fighters for air defence. That's pretty strong. In addition they have already over 50 fighters of the new F-2 and still around 130 older F-1 and upgraded F-4 in service. This makes Japan one the top ten air forces.

Saudi Arabia: Has less figthers than Israel, but a lot of more F-15 fighters (around 160) in modern versions, 100 Tornados and 70 old F-5 fighters. Israel has around 77 F-15 and 250 F-16(all other fighters are in currently in reserve, like Kfir and F4). But half of the fleet is in the A/B versions. For Aird defence is Saudi Arabia better equipped and the Tornados give a pretty good strike capability. I would say both countries are close together, because the israel air force lacks of many new avionic systems.

Italy: Is in my opinion on rank 14. It is right that Italy has already son Typhoons, but less than 20 and most of them are two seaters for pilot training. Germany and the UK have already more Typhoons in service.

In my opinion is Turkey on rank 11, followed by Greece and Sweden(Yes I mean this small scandinavian country, because of their fleet of the JAS-39 Gripen). Of course this will change when Italy, Germany and the UK will get all the Typhoons. But the other countries are not sleeping. Turkey is going to get some JSF, Greece is going to buy Typhoons. China e.g. dropped all programs to built more SU-27 for building a super version, the SU-37. And Japan announced interest for the F-22.

The italian air force has currently not much to offer. 104 old Starfighters (funny joke), the subsonic fighter AMX(138) which is not comparable with fighters like F-16, Tornado e.t.c it is more like the british Hawks. Around 100 Tornados and borrowed F-16 and Tornado ADV fighters. Not really top ten.

Maybe you are right strictly for the present, but in the next future, I think that Typhoon and more the F22 will change the air forces equilibrium. if it's right as it seems that 1 typhoon can shut down hipotetically 10 F16 or F18, 5 F15 or 4 Rafale. And the F22 could shut down 2 Typhoons. If this is right I think that only Typhoon and F22 operators could stay in the Top-ten.

I think the most important aircrafts of the current programs are the Typhoon, Rafale, JSF, F-22 Raptor as well as the newer versions of the SU-27 like SU-30 and SU-35.

Following this, I would guess that israel will not be in the Top-ten anymore in the near future, all other will only change their ranks. Instéad of Israel, I would guess that Turkey or Italy will join the top ten.

What about Rafale? It has been promised to be a very powerful and effective aircraft from Dessault, but the production is slowing down. The back bone of french Air force is always Mirage and Etendard. What do you think about it? Do you think France has been right to retire form Eurofighter program?
