The two-seat Mirage 2000N was designed to provide nuclear deterrence capability employing the long range ASMP cruise missile. Mirage 2000N replaced the Mirage IV aircraft. The Mirage 2000N penetrates enemy air defenses flying at low-altitude and supersonic speed using the Antilope-5 terrain following radar and Spirale integrated countermeasure system. Typically, it carries a single ASMP missile, two Magic air-to-air missiles and two external fuel tanks. In October 2003, the French DGA ordered development of K3 standard for Mirage 2000N nuclear strike aircraft. The Mirage 2000N K3 will be fully compatible with improved single nuclear warhead ASMP-A supersonic cruise missiles, and Recce NG reconnaissance pod developed by Thales Group.

The two-seat Mirage 2000D is a derivative of proven Mirage 2000N designed to perform precision attack missions. It features Antilope-5 radar, Spirale integrated countermeasures system and Damocles targeting pod for guided-precision weapons delivery. The Mirage 2000D aircraft performed well during operation Allied Force over the former Yugoslavia. Mirage 2000Ds delivered guided weapons such as BGL bombs and AS30L missiles. Mirage 2000Ds replaced part of Jaguar aircraft within the French Air Force in the precision deep strike role.
The French Air Force launched a modernization program on the whole Mirage 2000D fleet to add cruise missile and AASMs to the weapon options available for the Mirage 2000D airplane. Modernization work began in later 2003 with three aircraft undergoing upgrade per month at Air Force Base 113 "commandant Antoine de Saint-Exupéry". As of March 2005, 40 of 80 Mirage 2000Ds owned by the French Air Force were already cruise missile and AASM capable models.
