The Embraer ERJ 145 is a single aisle, cabin pressurized, twin-engine, regional jetliner characterized by a low operating cost. The aircraft is available in three configurations ER-Extended Range, LR-Long Range and XR Extra Long Range. The successful ERJ 135/145 family of commercial airplanes is composed of three variants with their seating capacity varying from 37 to 50 seats. The ERJ 135 has 37 seats, the ERJ 140 accommodates 44 seats and the ERJ 145 50 seats. The first ERJ 145 was delivered in December 1996, since then more than 700 units have been ordered. These aircraft have logged more than six million flight hours around the globe.
The ERJ regional jet has been adapted to military roles such as Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) under the EMB 145 AEW&C designation, also known as the R-99 A. EMB 145 AEW&C integrates Ericsson Microwave Erieye electronically scanned array sensor, IFF secondary radar and a highly automated network command and control system. Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) and Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) applications under the EMB 145 RS/AGS designation, also referred to as R-99 B. EMB 145 RS/AGS is operated by Brazil within the Amazon Surveillance System (SIVAM) program which started in 1997. EMB 145 aircraft adapted for maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare receives the P-99 designation.
In August 2004, the Embraer ERJ 145 low operating costs commercial aircraft was selected by the US Army as the airborne platform for the ACS (Aerial Common Sensor) program. The aircraft will be outfitted with the advanced equipment related to the ACS to perform network-centric ISR missions in support of US military forces. Embraer was a part of the Lockheed-Martin-led team for the ACS contract. Thereafter, the ACS program was cancelled.
Embraer and the Indian Defense, Research and Development Organization (DRDO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the development of a new Indian Air Force Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system. Embraer and the Indian DRDO will jointly develop the new system based on the EMB 145 Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform, an ERJ 145 jetliner application. A contract for three of such aircraft was expected for the development phase with further orders following after development completion.
