The 96L6E is an all-altitude surveillance radar intended specially to detect ballistic missiles as well as hypersonic missiles and aircraft flying at very high altitudes. It is integrated onto an 8x8 wheeled chassis similar to the one employed by the 92N6 multi-role fire control radar. The 96L6E target acquisition radar is an optional item of the S-400 air defense system which entered service on April 28, 2007. Each S-400 battalion can be equipped with at least one 96L6 radar system.

The 96L6-TsP is an upgraded variant of the 96L6 air surveillance radar especially well suited to detect ballistic missiles flying at high altitudes. The 96L6-TsP variant has been developed for the S-500 air defense system and will take care of acquiring incoming targets at high altitudes such as ballistic missiles. The new radar system is deployed mounted on a BAZ-69096 10x10 truck system.
