The Extended Area Protection and Survivability (EAPS) is a compact, kinetic energy, hit-to-kill interceptor designed to counter Counter Rockets, Artillery and Mortar (C-RAM) threats. The EAPS tactical weapon program provides mobile, hemispherical extended area protection from RAM threats. A system consists of several interceptors, fire control sensor, launcher, battle manager and an interface with battlefield surveillance sensors. The EAPS can fire several rounds simultaneously. The US Army awarded Lockheed Martin a contract for the development of the EAPS interceptor system in March 2008. The first test flight of the new vertically launched interceptor was carried out at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, on May 26, 2012.

The EAPS weapon system uses a vertically-launched Miniature Hit-to-Kill (MHTK) interceptor that defeats Rocket, Artillery and Mortar (RAM) targets at ranges greatly exceeding those of current systems. The affordable MHTK is an extremely agile, small hit-to-kill interceptor that weighs approximately 3 kilograms. It is less than 50 millimeters in diameter and less than 1 meter long.
