The US Air Force Tactical High-power Operational Responder (THOR) is a microwave weapon developed to counter attacks by swarms of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The THOR utilizes powerful microwaves to destroy the drones’ electronics rendering them useless while protecting high value facilities. An entire system fits into a single shipping container designed to be airlifted by a C-130 sized aircraft anywhere around the globe. The system development started in early 2017 and was ready for deployment in late 2019.
