The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) Type 87, also known as Sukaishuta, is an armored, self-propelled anti-aircraft gun system based on Type 74's tracked chassis. The system is intended to provide short-range air defense against low altitude airborne targets such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries provided the chassis while Japan Steel Works is responsible for the twin L90 35mm coaxial anti-aircraft cannons. The JGSDF has fielded 52 Type 87 anti-aircraft gun systems at division level.
The Type 87 gun system comprises two cooled 35mm cannons mounted side by side on a rotating turret. The surveillance and tracking radars are also placed at the turret as well as the cannon's ammunition fed system, and the digital computer-based fire control system. The Type 87's armored chassis provides protection against small- to medium-caliber firearms and artillery shells. Externally, Japan's Type 87 looks like the German Army's Gepard mobile anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) system.
