Boomerang

Initial Operational Capability (IOC) : 2024
Total Production : ?

The VPK-7829 Boomerang is a flexible amphibious, 8x8 wheeled combat vehicle family designed as the replacement for the BTR-80 and BTR-82 armored vehicles within the Russian Army and developed by the Military Industrial Company starting in November 2011. The new vehicle's multipurpose and flexibility characteristics allow it to serve as armored personnel carrier (APC), tank or self-propelled gun. The design of the new vehicle family focuses on surviving mine detonation and armor protection against small arms and small-caliber munitions as well as fragments of large caliber shells. The 15-20 ton vehicle is powered by a 510-hp diesel engine allowing a top speed of 100 kph for up to 800 kilometers. Besides, it is fitted with two waterjets for operation on water. The Russian Army expects to take delivery of the first Boomerang armored personnel carrier prototype in 2013 and mass production should start in 2015-2017 at Arzamas Machine-Building Plant.

The Boomerang vehicle family engines are placed at the front section with the troops being loaded up from behind using a ramp thus maximizing crew survivability and protection. The K-16 APC and the K-17 IFV are the two launch variants planned for entry into active duty in 2016 and 2017 respectively. The Russian military plans to deploy further versions to serve as command and control (C2), reconnaissance, electronic warfare, self-propelled artillery, armored ambulance and repair vehicles.

The Russian Marines K-17 Bumerang, K-17M designation?, is a version optimized to support amphibious operations capable of swimming distances of over 60 kilometers and being delivered onshore through hovercrafts. The vehicle leverages the same protection and modular firepower from the K-17 armored personnel carrier but should be modified to optimize its swimming capabilities with the aim to boost the 12 kph speed on water. The Russian Navy stated in August 2017 that the Marines Bumerang was already being developed with aim to equip the Naval Infantry replacing the BTR-80M and BTR-82A armored vehicles.
