The Bofors 40mm Mk 3 L70 naval gun has been designed for use against air and surface threats such as aircraft, anti-ship missiles, fast boats and helicopters. It is a digitized computer controlled gun constructed of non-magnetic materials to reduce weight and magnetic signature. Its magazine has a capacity for 101 detonation-programmable rounds, enough for 10 engagements.

The 40mm Mk 3 gun turret has been installed on small and large ships worldwide.

The Bofors 40 Mk4 naval gun system is a new version of the 40mm Mk3 gun system used by Navies and Coast Guards worldwide. In May 2015 the 40 Mk4 naval gun was selected for the Brazilian Navy 500T Macae class patrol vessels. The cannons were selected for the Belgian and Royal Netherlands Navies' anti-submarine frigates in 2024 as well as mine countermeasures vessels in 2023.
