The L55 also features optimized barrel material. It fires all 120mm NATO ammunition and is optimized for taking out heavy armored targets such as tanks. The 120mm L55 may have been surpassed by the new Russian 2A82-1M tank gun in 2015. The 120mm L55 gun was introduced along with the Leopard 2 A6 main battle tank in 2001. The gun was selected to provide outstanding firepower to the Republic of Korea's K2 Blank Panther tank.
