Honeywell AGT1500 compact, instant power gas turbine was developed to power the M1 Abrams family of main battle tanks operated by the US Army, Marine Corps and allied countries. The AGT1500 turboshaft provides high speed, power and quick acceleration for the heavyweight Abrams in the battlefield. Compared to diesel engines, AGT1500 features ease of maintenance thanks to its modular design but the operating cost stands higher. Moreover, a built-in Digital Electronic Control Unit (DECU) allows operational diagnostic capability.
Approximately 10,000 engines have been produced since its inception in the 1970s for the the United States, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Kuwait and Egypt. These engines have logged more than 25 million operating miles worldwide. For the 21st century, Honeywell and the US Army were working around the AGT1500 to decrease operating temperature and adding more durable components thus increasing the engine's reliability, durability which could extend double than its current figure, and lowering costs.
