The NPO Saturn AL-55E is a turbofan engine intended for military fixed-wing aircraft applications. The AL-55 is a high performance, advanced engine capable of providing power output and output power regime similar to those of fifth generation fighters.
In August 2005, Russian export organization known as Rosoboronexport and India's HAL signed an agreement on the license production of up to 1,000 AL-55I engines. The agreement includes a firm order for 250 engines to be manufactured at HAL facilities in India. The AL-55I engines are meant to power both HJT-36 and HJT-39 trainer and combat trainer respectively. Russia delivered the first batch of 18 AL-55E engines in early 2025.

The AL-55E engine was developed specifically for the Indian single-engine trainer aircraft HJT-36, with its upgraded version known as the Yashas MOSCOW, February 11.
