The Next Generation Jammer (NGJ) is an advanced electronic attack system being funded by the US Navy as the replacement for the ALQ-99 jamming pod. Raytheon, BAE Systems and Northrop Grumman are competing to make possible this advanced airborne jamming technology. The US Navy is expected to down select a single contractor to carry out this program by summer 2012. The NGJ jamming system is scheduled for deployment onboard the EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft, F-35 stealth aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles. The US Navy awarded Raytheon a $279 million contract for the NGJ development on July 9, 2013.
The new jamming pod is expected to rely on Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology. The pod drag will be reduced thanks to a more compact and slim design. The NGJ is expected to enter service with the US Navy beyond 2020. The NGJ-MBX or Next Generation Jammer Mid-Band Expansion is an upgrade planned for 2027 extending the range of frequencies.
