The LHA 1 Tarawa class amphibious assault ships were designed to put troops on hostile shores. They use LCAC, LCU and helicopters to move Marine assault forces ashore. The AV-8B Harrier provides limited air defense and air dominance to LHD ships, as well as sea control through ASW helicopters. Amphibious assault ships are designed to support assault from the sea against defended positions ashore. The US Navy is the largest operator of that type of ships worldwide. The US Navy procured five LHA ships commissioned between 1976 and 1980. The last ship, USS Peleliu, was decommissioned in March 2015.
