The M3R under development by ThalesRaytheonSystems, a joint venture Raytheon and Thales Group, is a new family of mobile, multi-functional, modular radars designed to provide air and tactical ballistic defense capabilities. The new radar will be able to operate in intense clutter environments detecting low radar cross section aerodynamic and ballistic targets at longer ranges than current radar systems. It is designed to provide 360-degree coverage surveillance and track for air defense and sector coverage surveillance and track for ballistic missile defense.

The first M3R radar systems should be deployed by France and Italy by 2010 within the advanced SAMP/T air and ballistic defense system. In air defense mode has a maximum detection range of 470 km and 1,000 km for the ballistic missile defense mode. This long-range electronically scanned array radar system can be operated remotely and features advanced anti-jamming capabilities.
