The Shmel is an individual, man-portable, shoulder-launched rocket weapon system intended for dismounted infantryman. The close-range weapon system has been designed to provide a cost-effective assault weapon that can be used with ease. The Shmel can fire three types of 93mm rocket-assisted munitions: RPO-A, RPO-D and RPO-Z. RPO-A is a Fuel Air Explosive (FAE) round used to destroy covered fire units in urban, field and mountain environment as well as fortifications, trucks and lightly armored vehicles. RPO-D is a smoke round meant to create a visual screen to blind enemy forces and intolerable conditions for enemy forces inside shelters. RPO-Z is an incendiary round capable of making fire on the ground, buildings, fortifications and fuel storage depots.

The Shmel-M, also known as RPO PDM-A, is an expendable, individual, man-portable, shoulder-launched rocket weapon system intended for dismounted infantryman in short- and close-range engagements. Compared with the Shmel, the improved weapon system features extended range, lighter design and enhanced lethality. The Shmel-M firing 90mm rocket-assisted munitions is capable of engaging enemy manpower placed in open field or in fortifications, buildings and bunkers; light armored vehicles and cars; and to damage buildings and fortifications. Firing the Fuel Air Explosive (FAE) round Shmel-M has a maximum range of 1,700 meters.
