The US Navy's Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV), also known as Sea Hunter, is an autonomous unmanned surface vessel intended to track submerged submarines all over the world. The high-tech robotic ACTUV vessel developed by DARPA will silently follow hostile submarines from a distance. The vessel is 132-foot long (about 40 meters) is especially well suited to follow diesel-powered submarines. It is equipped with radar-based navigation system that enables avoidance of obstacles such as rocks, shoals and other vessels. The vessel also incorporates Raytheon's Modular Scalable Sonar System (MS3) to detect and track extremely quiet submerged boats such as those owned by China, Russia and Iran. The exact specifications of the ACTUV vessel are unknown but it may be able to travel thousands of kilometers deployed at sea for several months. The US Navy may deploy the first ACTUV vessel by the end of 2015 or early 2016.
