The Russian Navy Kalina is a fifth generation (5G) conventional attack submarine equipped with an advanced air-independent propulsion (AIP) system. The new submarine would be far more quiet than both fourth generation (4G) conventional and nuclear-powered submarines. Compared to 4G conventional submarines the new boat would be able to remain submerged for longer periods of time. The new AIP system is intended to be fully developed by 2017, tested on the only Lada class submarine and the first boat of the Kalina class should be operational by 2018. The existence of the Kalina class project was announced by the Russian Navy on March 19, 2014.
