The LHD 1 Wasp class amphibious assault ships are the US navy's largest amphibious ships and are designed to put troops on hostile shores. They use LCAC, LCU and helicopters to move Marine assault forces ashore. The AV-8B Harrier provides limited air defense and air dominance to LHD ships, as well as sea control through ASW helicopters. Amphibious assault ships are designed to support assault from the sea against defended positions ashore. The US Navy is the largest operator of that type of ships worldwide. The US Navy planned to procure 8 LHD ships with the last one, the LHD 8 Makin Island, commissioned in 2007.

The LHD 8 Makin Island will be the first ship of this class featuring hybrid electric drive system. It will combine electric motors for loitering speeds with two General Electric's LM2500+ gas turbines rated at 35,000 brake horsepower (bhp). The LHD 8 will become the first ever military ship to be powered by the LM2500+ gas turbines. The US Navy expects the LHD 8 ship to pave the way for this gas turbine on future naval applications. The US Navy christened Makin Island (LHD 8) on Saturday, August 19, 2006 at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
