The P-15A is an indigenous stealth destroyer being built by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) for the Indian Navy. The new destroyers' design is based on the Delhi class destroyers but introducing extensive modifications such as stealth technologies. The construction of these three ships was delayed due to technical and workload issues at MDL. The Indian Navy original schedule was to commission the P-15A-class destroyers in the 2010-2013 timeframe but was delayed to 2014-2016. The INS Kolkata multipurpose destroyer was commissioned on August 16, 2014.
The 164 meters Kolkata-class destroyers feature a four gas turbines propulsion system in a COmbined Gas And Gas (COGAG) configuration developing a top speed in excess of 30 knots.

The Project 15B (P-15B) Visakhapatnam is an improved class of stealth destroyers that is being built by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) for the Indian Navy. The new destroyers' design are an upgraded version of the three P-15A ships commissioned starting in 2012. They are expected to include stealth technologies and advanced anti-ship and surface-to-air missiles as well as state-of-the-art sensors. The Indian Navy signed a contract with Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in January 2011 for the construction of four P-15B destroyers to be commissioned between July 2018 and July 2024. The P-15B destroyers should be the replacement for the five aging Rajput-class destroyers introduced in the 1980s. In December 2017 the delay in the procurement of the gas turbines set the new delivery date of the lead ship by 2021.
