The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC) program is aimed at delivering up to 15 frigates as the replacement for the Iroquois and Halifax class fighting ships between the 2020s and the 2030s. Several industry teams are competing for the CSC program based on existing or projected frigate designs. As of early 2018, the RCN is considering the British Type 26, the Dutch LCF and the Spanish F-100 frigates to meet the CSC requirements. Canada expects to get five frigates configured for area air defense and the remaining ten in a scaled-down air defense version similar to Halifax class frigates. An industry team may be selected in 2019. The construction of the first frigate is expected to start in the early 2020s and will be commissioned by 2028-2030.
The CSC program was re-designated as the River-class destroyer in 2024 with the first three destroyers to be delivered in the early 2030s.
