The Sperry Marine AN/SPQ-9B is a multimode X-band pulse Doppler radar designed to support anti-ship missile defense (ASMD) in surface combatants providing early warning. The AN/SPQ-9A was designed as the gun fire control radar for the Mk-86 fire control system. The improved AN/SPQ-9B radar, introduced in 2000, was designed to detect all known and projected sea skimming missiles in the littoral environment. Originally, the US Navy projected the SPQ-9B for installation on aircraft carriers (CVNs), DDG 51, LHD-1, LSD-41 and CG 47-class ships.

The US Navy has installed the AN/SPQ-9A version on the Spruance and Kidd-class destroyers and Ticonderoga-class cruisers. The AN/SPQ-9B has been provided to San Antonio-class amphibious assault ships. The SPQ-9 anti-ship missile warning system has been installed on allied navies' ships such as Germany's Charles F. Adams destroyers.
