Initial Operational Capability (IOC) : 2007

The KAB-500/1500S-E is a new precision guided munition family developed to meet the requirements of the Russian Federation Air Force (RFAF) for an all-weather, day/night, fire and forget weapon to take out surface and ground targets. The KAB-500/1500S-E guidance system is based on the 24-channel GLONASS global positioning system (GPS). The brain of the new munition is the PSN-2001 receiver designed by Moscow-based KB Compass. Basically, the KAB-500/1500S-E is the Russian counterpart to the United States Armed Forces Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) weapons family. According to Russian press, the RFAF intends to provide the new KAB-500/1500S-E guided bombs to Su-24M, Su-34, Su-35 and Mig-35 aircraft. India and China are targeted as the first export customers.
