The AN/TPY-4, formerly known as the TPY-X, is a ground-based, 3D, AESA, L-band, multi-function long-range radar for air defense surveillance incorporating Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology. The TPY-4 radar offers early warning, situational awareness, tactical ballistic missile surveillance and air defense in contested electromagnetic environments. The rotating antenna at 6 rounds per minute provides 360-degree coverage with a maximum detection range of 555 kilometers while in stop/stare non-rotating mode provides 90-degree coverage with a maximum detection range of 1,000 kilometers. The TPY-4 radar can detect and track targets flying at 30 kilometers of altitude as well as surface targets at -6 degrees supporting ground-based maritime surveillance. The TPY-4 radar development started in the early 2010s and was ready for testing and deployment in 2021. The first production radar was completed in May 2022 and was planned for fielding within 2023. In November 2022, Norway ordered the TPY-4 radar for its NORSE project.
