The Arena-E defensive aids suite is an armored vehicle protection system intended against guided and unguided anti-tank missiles and rocket propelled grenades. The system has been designed to counter multiple incoming threats simultaneously. Arena-E detects threats targeting the protected vehicle launched at ranges of 50 meters from the vehicle with speeds between 70 and 700 meters per second while discriminating the rounds and missiles fired by the vehicle's guns and battlefield debris which typically are below 70 meters per second. The Arena-E is an organic component of the upgraded BMP-3M armored infantry fighting vehicle.
The Arena-E systems consists of a turret-mounted radar and defensive directed munitions which are intended to intercept the incoming threat. The system including radar and munitions weighs roughly 900 kg. The all-weather, automatic Arena-E protection system provides a coverage of +/-110-degree in azimuth and -5 to +15-degree in elevation.
