The ELT/572 is a directional infrared countermeasure (DIRCM) system intended for both rotary- and fixed-wing aircraft. It was funded and developed jointly by Elettronica and Elop. The ELT/572 is based on Elop's MUSIC advanced fiber laser technology designed to counter MANPADS (man portable air defense systems) by emitting a laser beam towards an approaching missile causing the missile to veer off course. In June 2011, the Italian Air Force selected the ELT/572 DIRCM to equip its C-27J, C-130J and AW101 aircraft by 2014.
