The Kalashnikov RPK-16 is a 5.45mm lightweight and compact machine gun intended to equip infantry units replacing the RPK-74 machine gun. The RPK-16 outstands by having a sniper sight using a Picatinny rail and a barrel silencer with the capability of firing a single shot as well as long bursts. The new weapon is intended to equip special operations and rapid reaction forces. The gun can be fed by either a 30-round magazine or a 96-round drum with a maximum rate of fire of 700 rounds per minute and an effective range of 800 meters. The RPK-16 can be equipped with either a short or long barrel. The RPK-16 machine gun was unveiled at the Army military exhibition in September 2016.
