The Spanish Navy F110 class frigates are intended as the replacement for the F80 Santa Maria (FFG 7 Perry) class anti-submarine warfare (ASW) frigates. The F110 frigate is being designed to perform military missions during peacetime and wartime specially in the challenging littoral environment. These ships will feature anti-submarine capability and their displacement would be placed between the 2,500-ton of the Meteoro class and the 5,800-ton of the F100 Alvaro de Bazan anti-air warfare frigate/destroyer. The Spanish Navy plans call for the procurement of five vessels in the 2020-2025 timeframe.
