The Italian Navy's Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) is a 200 meters long amphibious assault ship capable of carrying rotary wing aircraft, vehicles and up to 700 marines or civilians during humanitarian relief operations. The LHD is intended to serve during both military and civilian operations. The LHD is also provided with four LCM landing crafts with a capacity for up to 60 tons of cargo. The ship features a COmbined Diesel eLectric Or Gas turbine plant (CODLOG) allowing a top speed of 25 knots. On board hospital has been designed to accommodate up to 28 injured patients. The Italian Navy awarded Fincantieri and SELEX ES a 1.1 billion Euro contract for the construction of the multi-purpose amphibious unit in July 2015. The LHD is scheduled for commissioning in 2022.
The LHD combat system comprises an X-band, four-faced multi-functional scanned-array radar system as well as the latest integrated communications. Other systems will be supplied by OTO Melara, WASS and Elettronica.
