Type 054
Initial Operational Capability (IOC) : 2005
Total Production : 75
The Type 054 class frigate has been designed as the replacement for aging and obsolete Type 053 frigates within the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). Type 054, NATO codename Jiangkai, are 3,400-ton class ships featuring stealthy design with reduced radar cross section and infrared signature for enhanced survivability. In addition, these ships are suitable for offshore and oceanic/blue water operations. Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard and Guangzhou Huangpu Shipyard are responsible for the construction of the Type 054 frigates. The lead ship, FFG 525 Ma'anshan, was commissioned by PLAN in 2005.

Type 054A
Group : Frigates
Status : Active
Also Known As : Jiangkai-II (NATO codename), Type 054AP
Origin : China
Contractors : Guangzhou Huangpu Shipyard, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding
Initial Operational Capability (IOC) : January 3, 2008
Total Production : 43
Unitary Cost : USD $350 million
The Type 054A class frigates is an improved version of Type 054 equipped with a Russian long-range search and fire control radar system and a Chinese-made 32-cell vertical launching system (VLS) at the bow. Type 054A, NATO codename Jiangkai-II, are multipurpose ships with enhanced anti-aircraft (AAW) capabilities compared to existing frigates in service with the PLAN. The stealthy design has been improved as well. The Type 054A lead ship might be commissioned by 2008. Overall, these ships would be equivalent to Western built frigates.
A vertical-launch version of 9M38/HQ-16 medium-range surface-to-air missile would be provided to the Type 054A class frigate enhancing its air defense capabilities. In addition to the 32 9M38/HQ-16 missiles, the ship's weapon system may include eight (2x4) YJ-83 anti-ship missiles; a 100mm gun at the bow mounted on a stealthy turret; and four Type 730 close-in weapon systems. The CODAD-based propulsion system comprises two French-made diesel engines developing 21,000-hp and two secondary diesel engines developing 8,840-hp. Type 054A leverages the flight deck and hangar from Type 054. In 2018 China started the construction of four Type 054AP frigates for Pakistan.

Type 054B
Group : Frigates
Status : Active
Also Known As : Jiangkai-III, Type 057
Origin : China
Contractors : China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation CSIC*, Guangzhou Huangpu Shipyard, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding
Initial Operational Capability (IOC) : January 22, 2025
Total Production : 30
The 6,000-ton class Type 054B or Jiangkai-III multi-purpose frigates are a further derivate of the Type 54 class vessels with enhanced anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities and an all-electric propulsion system developing 20 MW. China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) is responsible for the construction of the lead ship. The larger Type 054B frigate integrates both flight deck and hangar for a single Z-9C or Ka-28 ASW helicopter. Her vertical launch system (VLS) will accept HHQ-16C/D surface-to-air missiles, CY-3 anti-submarine missiles and YJ-85 supersonic long-range land attack/anti-ship missiles. Due to its larger hull the Type 054B may be fitted with more than 32 VLS cells. The ship will be fitted with an eight-cell FL-3000N close range air defense system similar to the US Navy's RAM anti-missile system. The weapon system also includes a 76mm PJ26 dual purpose gun, Type 81 anti-submarine rocket launcher and two triple 324mm torpedo tubes. The Type 054B existence was revealed in 2013 with the lead ship to be commissioned by the PLAN in 2016 or 2017. As of early 2021 the PLAN seems to be calling for 20 ships to be commissioned in the 2022-2035 timeframe. The Type 054B will leverage some technologies from Type 055 destroyer focusing on enhanced air defense capabilities and launching of land attack cruise missiles.
