The AAD (Advance Air Defence or Altitude Area Defense?) is a single stage, endo-atmospheric ballistic missile interceptor being developed by the Indian Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) on behalf of the Indian government. In December 2007, the AAD was demonstrated successfully intercepting a Prithvi ballistic missile at 15,000 meters of altitude and flying at highly supersonic speed. The AAD interceptor along with a Long Range Tracking Radar, Multi-function Fire Control Radar, Mission Control Centre, Launch Control Centre, Mobile Launcher, Mobile and Multi Layer Communication System may form the basis of a future Indian-made ballistic missile defense (BMD) capability. Nevertheless, the AAD missile is still at its earliest stages of development and remains uncertain that will finally lead to a BMD system.
