BAE Systems Awarded Second Contract to Upgrade FV430 Vehicle's Power Train

Newcastle, United Kingdom. - BAE Systems has been awarded a £70 million contract amendment by the UK Ministry of Defence to upgrade the power train of 400 FV430 series vehicles for the British Army. The original £85m contract, signed in October 2005, included the upgrade of the engine, transmission and other systems to 500 FV430 series vehicles. The upgraded vehicles are designated FV430 Mark 3.

Ian McNeeney, business director support programmes for BAE Systems Land Systems stated: "Schedule adherence has been critical on this programme. We have achieved all milestones despite the added challenge of concurrently fitting additional armour and weapon stations for operations in Iraq under Urgent Operational Requirements.

"The up-armoured, upgraded vehicles, designated Bulldog by the British Army, have been successfully deployed on the streets in Basra by the 2nd and 4th Rifles and the troops tell us they have every confidence in them. The contract amendment to convert further vehicles is the result of the team delivering a vehicle with a marked improvement in reliability and outstanding performance to the front line on time and to cost.

"The programme is an excellent example of the close and open relationship between the MoD’s Light Armoured Systems Support Integrated Project Team, ABRO, who carry out the conversion work, ourselves and the whole of the supply network."

Conversion of the additional quantity is scheduled to commence in September 2007 and extend the contract completion until March 2011. This will require an initial increase in output from 20 to 30 vehicles per month.
