All Four French and Italian Horizon-class Frigates Gather at La Spezia
Released on Wednesday, May 06, 2009

All four French and Italian air defence frigates built under the Franco-Italian Horizon programme gathered together at La Spezia, Italy, on 6 May 2009. This was the very first time that the four vessels — Forbin, Chevalier Paul, Andrea Doria and Caio Duilio — built by DCNS and Fincantieri had come together.

This exceptional meeting in the Mediterranean was used, among others things, to fine-tune the ships’ combat systems. Note that the French frigate Chevalier Paul, scheduled for delivery to the French Navy in a few months’ time, is still undergoing final outfitting.

These four frigates are among the most strategic vessels in the French and Italian Navies. All carry Aster 15 and Aster 30 anti-air missiles, MU90 torpedoes and 76-mm gun turrets. The Italian ships carry Otomat anti-ship missiles and the French ships Exocet anti-ship missiles.
