Russian Navy Orders Neman Side-Scan Sonar
Released on Friday, May 29, 2015

The Russian Navy will receive the Neman sonar, produced by NIIP

The Russian Defense Ministry has signed a contract with the V. Tikhomirov Scientific Research Institute of Instrument Design (NIIP), which is part of KRET, for the supply of Neman sonars to the Russian Navy to replace imported models.

In accordance with the results of an electronic auction, the first contract was signed to supply the state from 2015-2017 with Neman-GBOE-250 side-scan sonars to meet the needs of the Russian Defense Ministry, according to NIIP.

According to the press-service of the enterprise, NIIP has repeatedly demonstrated to representatives of the Ministry of Defense of Russia its achievements with sonar devices, including in comparative tests with the foreign sonars currently used by the Russian Navy.

The Neman sonar series has high interference immunity, long-range detection, and better resolution than similar foreign equipment on the market. With a single pass of its band, this powerful sonar can read the seabed up to a kilometer in width at depths of 50 to 100 meters.

Information about the Neman side-scan sonar series developed by NIIP has repeatedly appeared in the media, mainly due to its help in a variety of search and underwater expeditions, including the project "Warships of the Great Victory."

The underwater expedition "Warships of the Great Victory" has successfully searched for missing submarines for ten years. NIIP has traditionally supported the expedition by providing its sonar systems, and staff from the institute have participated in the search too.

In 2013-2014, an expedition discovered in the waters of the Baltic Sea the resting place of the S-9 combat submarine from the Great Patriotic War and the Lefort ship from the Russian Empire’s Baltic Fleet.

This year, the tenth “Warships of the Great Victory" expedition was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Victory. Neman sonars helped to find in the Gulf of Finland where the Buria patrol ship and the Fugas minesweeper sank, as well as the M-95 Soviet submarine.
