Mig-31BM to Be Equipped with New Navigation System for the Arctic
Released on Wednesday, June 24, 2015

A major upgrade of onboard radar is also planned for the helicopter-interceptor

KRET will provide new navigation systems for the MiG-31 fighter-interceptor, according to Vladimir Mikheev, Advisor to the Deputy KRET CEO.

“This aircraft will be equipped with a strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS),” Mikheev said, as quoted by TASS.

The KRET spokesman explained that the innovative system will enable the fighter-helicopter to navigate in the Arctic without assistance from GPS and GLONASS satellites. The SINS system is specially adapted for operating in conditions with low temperatures, increased background radiation, and the absence of satellite signals and communications with ground-based services. The SINS’s operating temperature range is from -60 to +55, with an extreme limit from -70 to +85 degrees Celsius.

Thus, SINS enables fully autonomous, high-precision navigation in the Arctic and in environments where access to other navigation systems is not possible. Pilots will be able to use SINS to determine their location and determine their route, even in the case of electronic failure.

Vladimir Mikheev said that the MiG-31 will also have a new version of the onboard Vitebsk electronic warfare system. The helicopter will also undergo a major modernization of its onboard Zaslon radar, according to the KRET spokesman.

“Several versions of the upgraded aircraft are currently being tested,” said Mikheev. “Customers will select the options that best suit them.”
