The Submarine Launched Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (SLIRBM) is a two-stage, solid-propellant ballistic missile to be used against time-critical targets all over the world such as terrorist organizations. The US Navy awarded a 16-month developmental contract on solid rocket technology to Lockheed Martin and ATK in July 2005. The purpose of that contract is to demonstrate the affordability of such a weapon and its suitability for the US Navy's Guided Missile Submarines (SSGN).

The US Navy's SLIRBM requirements call for a weapon capable of delivering a conventional payload at ranges of more than 1,100 miles (1,800 kilometers) within 10-15 minutes after launch. The SSGNs will gain through the SLIRBM a no-notice prompt global strike capability.
